ACUPUNCTURE

An initial acupuncture consultation includes a thorough intake of your presenting condition, and a treatment with needles.  The initial appointment lasts approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes.  Follow-up appointments last from 45 minutes to an hour.  All treatments are done with sterile, one-time use, disposable needles.  Children as young as 6 years of age can be needled.  Children who do not like needles or children younger than 6 are treated with moxibustion or laser acupuncture.  These same services are also offered to adults as options for treatment.

I typically recommend that patients come once a week for 6 weeks so that the energy can build in such a way to create a solid foundation for healing.  After 6 sessions, patients become quite attuned to their body and its needs, and will generally know intuitively how often they need to come for treatment.  Some patients will continue with weekly treatments, some will extend to every 2 weeks, some to every 3 weeks, some to once a month, and some will come back the next time another health issue arises.

The only time i will recommend that a patient come for treatment more often than once a week is in the case of acute muscle strain, serious illness, relapses of autoimmune diseases, preparation for surgery, labor induction, or fertility.

For patients who are limited in their ability to come regularly for treatment, whether because of time, scheduling or financial circumstances, I assign practices you can do yourselves to aid in your healing process.  There is always a way to work things out and make the treatments most beneficial for you as a patient.

MOXA

I often use moxibustion (“moxa” for short) as an adjunctive therapy to acupuncture.  Moxa is the herb mugwort that has been dried and ground up, and is then burned to create heat on acupuncture points.  The majority of patinets are most comfortable with what is called ‘indirect moxa’, where the moxa stick is held about an inch away from the acupuncture point.

GUA SHA AND CUPPING

Gua Sha and Cupping are two techniques for moving stagnant blood from muscle groups.  When the blood is stuck in particular area, it can make it difficult for the affected area to heal and become pain free.  With Gua Sha, i apply Vicks vapor rub over the affected area, and then glide a jar lid over the muscle groups  This allows the stuck blood to come up through the skin, creating a bit of what looks like a rug burn.  The technique does not hurt at all, however, and healing is accelerated.  cupping is a different technique that has the same effect.  It is often used for chest congestion.  Both are extremely effective techniques and there is no comparable equivalent in Western medicine.

EAR CANDLING

This simple practice has been around for at least 2000 years.

While Western medicine dismisses this practice as quackery and claim it may even be dangerous, i have found ear candling to be highly effective for fever, sinus infections, ear popping, tinnitus and headaches.  I use this technique regularly on children to bring down fever and nip early stage ear infections in the bud, thereby voiding the use of antibiotics.

NAET (Allergy Elimination Technique)

NAET (Allergy Elimination Technique): This is a highly effective technique used for the elimination of allergies ranging from foods to molds, pollens and dust to physical substances found in standard household products.  Allergies to animals are also effetively treated with NAET.  NAET can be done  with or without acupuncture needles.  It is a technique was developed by Dr. Devi Nambudripad, an Indian woman who is a medical doctor, cupuncturist and chiropractor.  She developed this technique to effectively treat her own multiple chemical sensitivities.  This treatment is EXCELLENT FOR CHILDREN!

FAR INFRARED TREATMENTS

For those needle phobic patients, far infrared treatments are the energetic equivalent of several acupuncture treatments and are excellent for muscle sprains and tears, infertility, anxiety, immune strengthening and a whole host of other ailments and conditions.  These treatments are also an excellent way to stop smoking and lose weight and reduce cellulite.  See more on the Far Infrared page.
